Sunday shouts
Good Sunday morning. Time for another round of Sunday college shoutouts for you.
We have a dual headliner this morning involving a pair of young ladies from the lower Valley who dazzled yesterday in their respective sports, helping their teams post successful results. First, we hit the soccer pitch, where Carnation's Madelyn "Mad Dog" Davidson was once again a difference maker for Southeastern University of Florida's ladies. The junior scored both of her team's goals, including the game winner with about five minutes left in regulation, helping SEU sneak past New College of Florida last night 2-1 on the Florida Gulf Coast. Davidson, a junior with the Fire, had a total of seven shots recorded in the game, five on goal, as the Fire needed every last bit of the Cedarcrest HS grad's energy to score that much-needed win as Southeastern has struggled to start the season. WTG Mad Dog!
Also, Duvall's Ellie Sivesind gets a shout this morning. The swimmer competing for Azusa Pacific University's women only saw the pool once - in the 50-yard freestyle event - yesterday at the Rodoloff Invitational being hosted by Pepperdine University down in southern California, but with her mom on hand cheering her on, Sievsind made that limited work count, winning her heat race and using that to propel herself to a fifth-place overall finish in the event. WTG Ellie. Time was 25.02 seconds for the sopohomore, also a CHS alum.
Elsewhere on the soccer pitch, Cedarcrest alum Sidra Griffin saw action twice this past week for Linfield University's women in games involving that squad; she is from Duvall, and on the men's side, Mount Si HS alums Erik Davies (Redlands), Sullivan Smith (NW Nazarene), Evan Bleyer (Pacific-OR) and Zach Ramsey (Washington) all saw action as did Cedarcrest grad Paul Lopez (St. Martin's.). Sullivan, from Fall City, and Lopez, from Duvall, faced each other head-to-head yesterday when NNU's Nighthawks hosted the visiting Saints. Both guys got to start for their respective teams with Lopez recording two shots, neither on goal, for St. Martin's, in the 4-0 shutout win for NNU over the Saints over in Nampa, ID.
Football shouts go to the following Mount Si and Cedarcrest HS grads repping the Valley on the college gridiron yesterday - Lucas Freitas (Montana), Charlie Vliem (Idaho), Slater Macko (Black Hills State), Beau Phillips (Central Washington) and Stuart DeMerit (Concordia-MN). Of these, only DeMerit, from Snoqualmie, landed on the statsheet, with three solo tackles on defense for the Cobbers in a 31-6 road win over Carleton in the Minneapolis suburb of Northfield, MN.
We have some shouts as well for men's cross country this morning. Five Mount Si and Cedarcrest alums - Tychon Preston (Oregon Tech), John Pratapas (Central Washington), London Haley (Whitworth), Austin Gappa and Andrew Ross (both George Fox), all raced this weekend in various meets both in the Northwest and around the country. Haley, from Duvall, took 10th yesterday in the men's race at the Whitman Invitational in Walla Walla, clocking 25 minutes, 8.50 seconds, and Gappa, from North Bend, took eighth for the Bruins at the D-III national preview meet late Friday in Terre Haute, IN, clocking 24:41.43. Ross finished 45th in that race also running for Fox. He also is from North Bend. Preston and Pratapas both raced yesterday for their respective schools at the Charles Bowles meet in Salem, OR, with mid-pack finishes for both Snoqualmie products.
Rounding it out, volleyball gives us another weekly helping of Mount Si grads Friley Curtiss and Lauren Kremer. The duo, both from North Bend, both saw action for their respective teams in blowout wins last night. Curtiss had seven blocks and an assist for Southern Oregon as they cruised to a 25-19, 25-15, 25-13 win over Multnomah University in Portland, while Kremer had five kills, three blocks, an assist and an ace in a 25-16, 25-10, 25-6 sweep of Lewis & Clark College from Portland at home in Spokane. Both young ladies are sophomores this fall. We finish with some golf. Mount Si alum Taylor Fierling finished 23rd this past week for Carroll College's men at the Beartooth Open tournament in eastern Montana, after firing rounds of 81, 82 and 79 over the two days of the tournament. Fierling is from North Bend and a sophomore this fall. WTG all of you.
That is the roundup for this week. Back next Sunday with another round for you.
