Sunday college shouts
Good Sunday morning and it’s time for our weekly college sports shouts on this Sunday. Going to lead this off with something we won’t normally lead off with which is nice. We are hitting the pool for a little women’s college swimming.
The season is underway in that sport at the college level, and Cedarcrest High School alum Ellie Sivesind is finding herself with a significant role to start the season with Azusa Pacific University’s ladies. In action yesterday at the Pacific Coast Swim Conference relay meet down in southern California, the Duvall sophomore competed with the Cougars’ top team in three of four events and that squad posted wins in those races, which included the 200 yard, 300 yard and 400 yard freestyle events. The Valleyite competed in the 500 yard freestyle with Azusa’s “B” team which finished second in that race. Winning times were 1:38.35 in the 200, 3:33.41 in the 400 and 2:58.01 in the 300 for the relay units.
Sivesind is one of two Valley athletes competing in swim and dive at the college level this fall; the other is Mount Si High School grad Ty Mitton, who is in men’s diving at Colorado Mesa University. Both schools are in NCAA Division II. Both of these athletes will be in action this coming weekend at separate meets, so we wish both of them good luck.
Our football shout this morning goes to Stuart DeMerit. The senior, from Snoqualmie, had a homecoming to remember for Concordia College-Moorhead (MN) yesterday, with a team-high seven tackles, two of which went for loss of yardage for the visiting St. Scholastica squad, and Concordia blanked them 35-0. DeMerit, a Mount Si alum, had his entire family and a couple of family friends roll in from around the country to watch him play at home on Homecoming for the Cobbers, who went to 2-1 on the season with the win. We also have a shout this morning for Andrew Edson; the WSU senior had six tackles and a forced fumble for WSU in a 45-24 loss last night to future league rival Boise State down in Boise on the blue turf. Edson is from Snoqualmie and is also a MSHS alum.
Finishing out things, a quick mention that several other MSHS grads – Lucas Freitas (Montana), Heath Ozaeta (Oklahoma), Slater Macko (Black Hills State) and Beau Phillips (Central Washington) all played in games for their teams yesterday as well, repping their community strong. Way to go gentlemen!
Hitting the links for some golf. We mentioned in our special item last Tuesday the performance of Mount Si grad Drew Warford for the UW’s men at their tournament in Fall City. Well, the Snoqualmie product finished out the event last Tuesday with a 72 and finished tied for sixth four shots behind the winner at seven-under par in the Tindall event at Aldarra Golf Club. Warford was not the only local collegian on the links this past week. Three others were as well, and we’ll shout them out here this morning.
WWU junior Kasey Maralack competed for the Viking women in their event up at Simon Fraser U. this past week and finished with a 23-over par 239 for three rounds at that tournament well back in the field placing-wise. Embry-Riddle Arizona women’s sophomore Charlotte Giffin finished third in a tournament this past week in Arizona firing a five-over 218 over three rounds, and Carroll-MT men’s sophomore Taylor Fierling fired a 16-over par 232 and finished 14th for the Saints in their season-opening event in north-central Montana. Giffin is from Duvall, Maralack is from Snoqualmie and Fierling is from North Bend. Giffin is a CHS alum while the others are both MSHS grads.
Volleyball shouts to North Benders Lauren Kremer and Friley Curtiss once again this morning for you. Kremer dropped six kills, four blocks and two aces for Whitworth in a 25-10, 26-28, 25-21, 25-14 rivalry win this past Wednesday over Whitman in Walla Walla, while Curtiss had four kills and a dig last night for Southern Oregon as they cruised to a 25-17, 25-12, 25-14 home sweep over Evergreen State in Ashland, OR. Both young ladies are sophomores and Mount Si HS alums.
Cross country shout also today for Gonzaga University’s Paul Talens. The men’s competitor scored a mid-pack finish this past Friday for the Bulldogs at the Nuttycombe meet hosted by the University of Wisconsin. Talens, from Fall City, clocked 24 minutes, 51.1 seconds. He is a MSHS alum.
Our soccer shout goes to Academy of Art’s Kayla Hampton. The women’s soccer goalie, from Duvall and a CHS alum, got her first start of the season on Wednesday for “Art U” in their 2-1 loss to William Jessup which saw the squad score their first goal of the season. The team is winless in several matches to start the season. Hampton made seven saves on nine shots faced in the contest. Others from the Valley seeing action on the pitch this past week include men’s players Evan Bleyer (Pacific-OR), Paul Lopez (St. Martin’s) and Erik Davies (Redlands) and women’s players Madelyn Davidson (Southeastern-FL) and Sidra Grffin (Linfield). Bleyer and Davies, both MSHS alums, are from Snoqualmie, while Davidson, from Carnation, and both Lopez and Griffin, from Duvall, are CHS alums.
That closes things out for this week. Getting the basketball schedules by the way fully set up and are continuing to update TV/streaming availability for these games. For an updated schedule, message me with your email address and I’ll send you the most updated copy I have.
