Tuesday softball shouts
Good Tuesday morning. Time for our weekly softball shoutouts as the fall portion of the 2024-25 travel softball season is now well underway.
Many of the region's top teams, and a number of top young ladies from the Valley, competed this past weekend in the first of two straight weekends of significant local action. The tournament this past weekend was organized by the Washington Acers program, and several of those local players earn shoutouts this morning.
Leading that off is Mount Si High School sophomore Madi Brand. Brand had a very good weekend with her team, Woodinville's Elevate Bowman 16U's. Brand was a factor in several of their team's games over the course of the weekend event, headlined by a walkoff single in a game on Sunday that lifted Elevate to a 9-8 win over the Washington Wildcats. Brand as noted was a significant element for her squad as they won the 16U "B" division title at the tournament, one of three teams with Valley players to take titles in the weekend event. The others were Fall City-based KB 14U Silver (Riley), coached by Valley resident - and Mount Si grad - Chris Riley and featuring several players from the Valley, and Elevate's 18U Benson team, featuring Wildcat outfielder Maggie Potoshnik although she did not play in any of the games this past weekend.
In KB's title win, they took the 14U "Silver" division crown, pitcher Sami Garrett stood tall allowing two runs on five hits striking out six in a 10-2 victory over Bellevue-based Flame Fastpitch Usher, and the Benson team beat Puyallup-based New Level to take the tournament's 18U "Silver" crown.
Also of note from the weekend tournament, we have a shout for Mount Si's Ally Hetzel, who pocketed her first homer of the fall schedule in a 13-0 win for her Washington Ladyhawks Simpson over that New Level crew. We also have a shout for a pair of Cedarcrest High School players as well. Josie Fiala went 2-4 with a triple, scored two runs and drove in a third as Carnation-based Absolute Blast Rafferty scored a 7-2 win last Saturday over Soar Athletics. In that game, Red Wolve Lily Rafferty went the distance in the circle allowing the two runs on only one hit walking four and striking out five. Good stuff there. Among the others that also saw action over this past weekend with club teams include Mount Si's Bella Scappini and Jenna Nowak, Cedarcrest's Paityn Craig, Abby Combs and Olivia Lowell, and Redmond's Ella Carter, the sister of CHS alum Michaela Carter.
Not every team competed in the Acers event. Woodinville's Voodoo 18U's went down to Olympia this past Saturday and tested their skills against community college players, and proved very successful doing so. Voodoo beat both Grays Harbor and Olympic Community Colleges outscoring the two NWAC schools by the combined total of 13-3. Mount Si's Westyn Haigh and Georgia Dennis both chipped in, with both of them each going 1-3 in the Voodoo 5-2 win over OCC. As yours truly has mentioned previously, coach Clint Rhinehart is a coach that is not afraid to do things other coaches won't. Well, while everyone is competing in the big tournament, he prepares his girls by having them face ostensibly more challenging competition with those community college squads, and we'd say they got themselves an A for their efforts. Way to go Westyn, Georgia and the rest of the Voodoo crew.
Also, Wildcat Faspitch Club's 14U teams played in scrimmage competition as well over the weekend, with the West, Johnson and Duxbury teams all seeing action in various events. Of note, Johnson beat Misfits Fastpitch 13-6 with Mount Si freshman Lacy Johnson making things happen, going 2-3 with two runs scored in that game this past Saturday. Duxbury's crew also this past Saturday also blew out that same Misfits team 10-2, with fellow SVSD student Katelyn Stobie leading the way there with two hits, two runs scored and two RBI's. West swept a doubleheader on Sunday over Sundodgers from Woodinville, winning the two games 17-3 and 9-3. Ari West homered in both games, and there were also homers from multiple other players in the doubleheader for the WFC. Good stuff there.
This coming weekend, the Flame program is holding its own large tournament with many of the teams that competed in this past weekend's Acers event also competing in this weekend's tournament. So we expect a large segment again next Tuesday at this time for all of you. Good stuff on the diamond.
We have a bonus segment on tap this morning as well with some of the other sports from this past weekend we missed. Baseball, motorsports, soccer and some volleyball also. That is later on.
