College shouts
Time now for our regular Sunday installment of college athlete shoutouts for Valley athletes competing in fall college sports. The smorgasbord for you this morning with all sports repped. We'll lead off with football.
The shouts this morning go to a pair of Mount Si HS grads who recorded important milestones last night in their college experience. First, down in Canyon, TX, just outside Amarillo, the wait proved to be well worth it for Wildcat alumnus Beau Phillips. The freshman with Central Washington University and from Snoqualmie became the first of the Mount Si trio with Central this fall to make his college debut, doing so for Central's 'Cats in a 45-3 blowout of West Texas A&M in a game that did not start until 10:00pm local time due to heavy weather in the area last night, and didn't end as a result until 1 this morning. Hope Beau, Brock and Cooper all got a good night's sleep on the flight back from down there last night. Rest up today all three of you.
Also, lineman Heath Ozaeta made his starting debut on the University of Oklahoma offensive line last night, going the distance and playing the whole way for the Sooners in their 25-15 nationally-televised loss to Tennessee at home in Norman, OK. Ozaeta, a sophomore from North Bend, has been working his way up the depth chart to get himself in this position, and has gained some attention from media covering the program over the past week. So we'll see how people viewed his performance this coming week. Keep an eye out for that here on this feed.
Also of note from football, Mount Si grads Andrew Edson (WSU), Lucas Freitas (Montana) and Slater Macko (Black Hills State) along with Cedarcrest HS alum Zach Llenza (Carnegie Mellon) all saw action in their respective teams' games this week; Edson had three tackles including a QB sack and forced fumble for the Cougars in their 54-52 win last Friday over San Jose State and Macko recorded a tackle on defense for Black Hills in their 33-7 blowout of Colorado's Fort Lewis College yesterday.
Our volleyball shouts this morning go to the duo of Lauren Kremer and Friley Curtiss. The sophomores, both from North Bend, dazzled in action for their respective schools over the past couple of days. Kremer had 10 kills and a block last Friday for Whitworth in their 25-17, 25-20, 25-18 sweep at home in Spokane over Pacific of Oregon, then yesterday, Curtiss dropped nine kills and a block for Southern Oregon in a 25-22, 25-27, 25-20, 30-28 nail-biter of a win over Lewis-Clark State over in Lewiston, ID. Both young ladies are 2023 Mount Si alums.
We hit the pitch for soccer. Women's shouts go to Cedarcrest alums Madelyn "Mad Dog" Davidson and Sidra Griffin. Davidson pocketed a goal for her Southeastern-FL squad in a 4-3 loss to league rival Keiser this past Wednesday, while Griffin assisted on a goal which turned out to be a game-winner for Linfield last Sunday in a 2-1 win over Pacific of Oregon. The two of them played in other games their teams played this past week. Griffin is from Duvall while Davidson is from Carnation.
Men's shout goes to Evan Bleyer. The senior, from Snoqualmie, assisted on the game's lone goal this past Wednesday for his Pacific of Oregon squad in a 1-0 win over Linfield. Bleyer is a Mount Si grad. Also seeing action this week on the college men's pitch were Mount Si grads Zach Ramsey (UW), Erik Davies (Redlands) and Sullivan Smith (NW Nazarene) along with Cedarcrest grad Paul Lopez (St. Martin's). Way to rep the Valley all of you!
On the links, shout this week goes to Western Washington women's senior competitor Kasey Maralack. Maralack, a MSHS alum from Snoqualmie, finished tied for 40th yesterday at the season-opening Grisham Shootout tournament down in Pierce County. She fired rounds of 80 and 79 to finish with a 15-over par total of 159 on the par-72 Home Course layout in DuPont.
Cross country saw three local men hit the trail yesterday. At the PLU meet in Tacoma, Cedarcrest alum London Haley, from Duvall, and Mount Si alum John Pratapas, from Snoqualmie, both ran; Haley finished 14th clocking 25 minutes, 20 seconds and Pratapas finished 60th with a time of 27:10.60. Haley ran for Whitworth in the race while Pratapas ran for Central Washington. In Arcata, CA, Oregon Tech's Tychon Preston took 20th clocking 27:19.8 at the Humboldt State meet. Preston is from Snoqualmie. WTG gentlemen!
That is all for this week. More in our next installment next week!
